Next Step in Advancing Vehicle Energy Technology

TORRANCE, Calif.--July 9, 2002--Enova Systems, Torrance, California (OTCBB:ENVA), today commended the California Legislature for its passage of the California Climate Bill (AB 1493), which directs the state Air Resources Board to set emission standards to "achieve the maximum feasible reduction of greenhouse gases" from cars, light duty trucks and other non-commercial vehicles.
Carl Dean Perry, Enova President and CEO, stated: "We encourage Governor Davis to sign this legislation, which has potential to bolster California's commitment to fuel cell hybrid and other clean technology vehicles. As exemplified by Toyota's recent announcement, from Torrance, that it will sell a fuel cell powered SUV by the end of this year, the private sector is responding to the public demand for clean, reliable energy for family transportation. This new legislation would make that public demand more emphatic and urgent."
Enova Chairman of the Board Anthony Rawlinson added: "California is the world's fifth-largest economy, and its environmental leadership is respected worldwide. The state's adoption of this new law will put in proper perspective the recent questions raised by the legal challenges to its Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) law, as well as uncertainty about America's national policy following its rejection of the Kyoto Protocol. Given that California's emission standards historically have been adopted in short order by other populous states, then by the national government, the Golden State's new drive for CO2 reduction will bolster the already-strong prospects for advanced energy technologies worldwide."
Recognizing that motor vehicles account for approximately 40% of greenhouse gas emissions in California, AB 1493 would grant authority to the Air Resources Board to draft regulations, by 2005, for vehicle standards based on the best available, feasible technologies, to take effect in the 2009 model year.
Enova Systems has a long record of leadership in the design and manufacture of mission-critical components for advanced energy technologies. As previously announced, Enova's global partners include Ford Motor Company, and Hyundai, both of which apply Enova enabling technologies as part of their path-breaking hybrid electric vehicles.
