LOS ANGELES--July 4, 2002--An upward burst in
gasoline prices fizzled on the week of the 4th of July as a three-week
run up in pump prices ended, according to the Weekend Gas Watch,
compiled by the Automobile Club of Southern California.
The Weekend Gas Watch monitors the average price of gasoline at
popular destinations for motoring trips.
Currently, the average price of self-serve regular unleaded
gasoline in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area is $1.627 per gallon,
which is two-tenths of a cent lower than last week's price, 5 cents
higher than last month's price and 30 cents lower than the price at
this time last year.
In San Diego the price is $1.650, which is one-tenth of a cent
higher than last week's level, 5 cents higher than last month and 32
cents lower than last year. Motorists in the central coast have an
average price of $1.699, which is eight-tenths of a cent below last
week's price, 4 cents higher than last month's price and 26 cents
lower than the price last year.
"The customary run up in prices before a traditional driving
holiday hasn't occurred this year," said Auto Club spokesperson Jeff
Spring. "Prices have leveled off and there appears every indication
that they should stay close to where they are for the immediate near
term, at least."
