Honda Leads Auto Industry in Improving Fuel Economy, NYT Says

Detroit, June 12 Bloomberg News is reporting that Honda Motor Co. stands apart from other car manufacturers because it has supported government measures to improve fuel economy and leads the industry in developing fuel-saving technology, the New York Times reported.

Honda told federal regulators that most sport utility vehicles, pickup trucks and minivans should meet the higher fuel standards required of passenger cars, the Times said. Honda is the only major automaker that hasn't joined the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, the industry trade group that led the fight against stricter fuel and emission standards, the paper said.

Honda also is one of the few carmakers that didn't support an advertising campaign aimed against a Senate proposal to raise gasoline mileage standards for the first time since the 1980s, and isn't taking part in another campaign against a California bill to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the Times said.
