Troy Clarke Named Group VP GM Manufacturing and Labor Relations

GM Appoints Troy Clarke Group Vice President, Manufacturing And Labor Relations

DETROIT - Troy Clarke has been named group vice president of GM Manufacturing and Labor Relations, effective June 1, President and CEO Rick Wagoner announced today.

Clarke has been vice president of labor relations since January 2001. In his new position, he will assume responsibility for North America vehicle manufacturing, vehicle operations, Metal Fabricating Division, as well as labor relations. He will serve as GM's chief negotiator for the 2003 United Auto Workers labor negotiations. Clarke will continue to serve on GM's North America Strategy Board.

"Troy brings an impressive level of manufacturing and general management experience and capabilities to this important position," Wagoner said. "He understands the critical role our manufacturing and union team members play in building our great cars and trucks around the world."

Clarke will continue to report to Gary Cowger, president of GM North America. Cowger will remain GM's global process leader for manufacturing.

"Troy has done an outstanding job of improving our relationship with our union partners through open and honest communications," Cowger said. "He also has demonstrated the ability to work with our manufacturing leadership team, and is well-prepared to build on the progress we are making in quality, productivity and implementation of the GM Global Manufacturing System."

Clarke, 46, joined GM as a co-op student at the Pontiac division in 1978 and was promoted to several engineering and manufacturing positions at Pontiac. From 1987 to 1990, he was production manager for GM's metal fabricating plant in Grand Rapids, Mich. He served as director of GM de Mexico's Ramos Arizpe complex from 1990 to 1992, and in 1993 he was named manager of GM's assembly plant in Fairfax, Kan., a position he held until he was promoted to director of manufacturing for GM de Mexico in June 1997. In December 1997, he was named president and managing director of GM de Mexico, and a GM vice president.

Clarke holds a bachelor's degree in engineering from the General Motors Institute and a master's degree in business administration from the University of Michigan.

The GM Board of Directors approved Clarke's appointment at its regular meeting today.
