General Motors Foundation Commits To Michigan Metro Girl Scouts Gold Award Scholarship Recipients

DETROIT- General Motors Foundation has donated $25,000 to Michigan Metro Girl Scout Council to be used for deserving Girl Scouts who have achieved the highest award possible - the Gold Award and the scholarship program.

The highest award for Girl Scouts is the Gold. The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest achievement and has five requirements, all of which requires efficient organizational, time management, and leadership skills. The Gold Award is an opportunity for Girl Scouts to develop leadership skills, career interests, and gain personal experience in serving their community

GM Vice Chair, GM Foundation, Debbie Dingell, says "The GM Foundation is pleased to support the Michigan Metro Girl Scout Council. We want to ensure that this year's award recipients get the recognition and the reward they deserve. These young girls have worked hard and the scholarships will help them realize their scholastic goals." Dingell is also a board member of the Michigan Metro and the National Advisory Girl Scout Council.

Michigan Metro Girl Scouts is one of just a handful of Councils nationally that offers a scholarship to girls who achieve the Gold Award. This program began for Michigan Metro Council Girl Scouts in 1994 when the MMGSC acquired the Northern Oakland Council.

Girl Scouts of the USA is the world's pre-eminent organization for girls, with a membership of more than 3.7 million girls and adults. Today, as when founded in 1912, GSUSA helps cultivate values, social conscience and self-esteem in young girls, while also teaching them critical life skills that will enable them to succeed as adults. In Girl Scouting--and its special girl-only environment--girls discover the fun, friendship and power of girls together.

GM and the GM Foundation are committed to the communities in which its employees live, work and do business. GM ranks among the world's top corporations in philanthropy. The GM Foundation, established in 1976 and funded entirely by GM, provides the focal point for administering GM's philanthropic programs.

Michigan Metro Girl Scout Council is the sixth largest in the USA and provides leadership and cultural development opportunities for more than 32,000 girls in most of Wayne and Oakland Counties. This year Girl Scouts across the USA celebrate 90 years of Girl Scouting.
