AAA Offers Tips for Winter Driving

DEARBORN, Mich., Feb. 26 -- Most Michigan motorists seem to be coping well with snow conditions today, according to AAA Michigan. Between midnight and 4 p.m., the Auto Club's Emergency Road Service system responded to 1,415 calls, slightly above the level of a normal day.

To help avoid problems, AAA Michigan offers these winter-driving tips:

Before starting the drive, clear snow and ice from all vehicle windows. Drive with headlights on low beam. Accelerate slowly to avoid spinning the wheels. Keep focused on the road to anticipate traffic signals and potential dangers. Adjust your speed to road conditions and increase the normal distance between you and the vehicle ahead of you. Avoid hard breaking. Apply firm pressure to a point just short of lock-up, then ease off the pedal slightly. If your vehicle has anti-lock brakes, apply continuous, firm pressure. If a skid starts, ease off the accelerator and don't lock up the brakes. Carefully steer in the direction you want to go and straighten the wheel as soon as the vehicle starts heading in that direction.
