Parnelli Jones To Receive Eagle One-Shav Glick Award Los Angeles, Calif., February 4, 2002 -- Parnelli Jones, whose remarkable career as a race car driver and owner made him one of the most recognizable names in motor racing, has been chosen the winner of the third annual Eagle One-Shav Glick Award. The award, presented by the car-care products company, honors the venerable motorsports writer of the Los Angeles Times and is a symbol of distinguished achievement in motor racing by a Californian. Previous winners were Dan Gurney and NHRA founder Wally Parks. Other nominees were: Rick Mears, Don Prudhomme, Les Richter and the late Mickey Thompson. Judges were motor racing writers and executives. Jones will receive the award on April 28 at California Speedway during trackside ceremonies prior to the NASCAR NAPA Auto Parts 500. His motor racing career, which began in 1952, includes more than 175 wins as a driver or car owner in virtually every classification of auto racing. He won the Indy 500 in 1963 and owned the car driven by Al Unser that won the race in 1970 and 1971. He also won the NASCAR Motor Trend 500 at Riverside, Calif, in 1967. He continues to drive in celebrity and vintage car races. "From racing jalopies as a teenager in Torrance, Calif., to winning the Indianapolis 500, Parnelli Jones is a living example of the American rags-to-riches story," said Glick.
