GM Venezolana Launches Chevrolet Astra

Caracas, Venezuela -GM Venezolana (GMV) launched the Chevrolet Astra, a vehicle expected to strengthen Chevrolet's dominance of the passenger car market. The first wave of vehicles is being imported from Europe while GM Venezolona will begin manufacturing the Astra in 2002. The Chevrolet Astra, which has been well-received by customers in Latin American markets such as Brazil, Colombia and Mexico, will be available in sedan, coupe and convertible models. It will be offered with 1,8 and 2,2 liter gasoline engines; and a choice of manual or automatic transmission.

"The Astra's safety, driving and performance attributes pose clear competitive advantages that will earn it a privileged position in the Venezuelan market," said Mike Nylin, managing director, GM Venezolana.

GM Venezolana, C.A. has been in business for 52 years, the past 22 as the undisputed leader of the Venezuelan automotive market. It employs a team of 1600 men and women and manufactures a broad range of vehicles including Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban, Impala and Corsa models for the domestic and Andean export markets. Operations in Valencia include vehicle assembly, a parts and accessories warehouse and a service-training center. GMV sells domestic and imported vehicles exclusively under the Chevrolet brand. A network of 52 dealers markets and sells Chevrolet vehicles as well as provides technical assistance and spare parts support.
