Honda Gold Wing is Motorcylist magazine's Motorcycle Of The Year
Thursday, September 6, 2001 Torrance, CA - Honda's 2001 GL1800 Gold Wing won the prestigious Motorcycle Of The Year Award (MOTY) Thursday night, September 6 at the annual Motorcyclist magazine awards banquet held at the Marconi Automotive Museum in Tustin, CA. Honda's new high performance street rod, the VTX, took home top honors as Best Cruiser. Of the Gold Wing, Motorcyclist's editors said, "We offer this accolade in part to applaud Honda for taking the Big Risk and sending the GL into untrodden territory for a full-size tourer. Not only did Honda dramatically upshift the GL's performance, it recast the basic role of its flagship model. That took real guts." Similar words of praise rang out for Honda's 1800cc VTX. "Power-cruiser buyers have spoken and they want power, big cubes and plenty of presence and bragging rights. Honda's VTX has them all; plus it's as civilized as you'd expect a Honda to be, reasonably priced and handsome." Honda's Senior Manager for Motorcycle Press, Gary Christopher noted, "We are tremendously pleased to receive these awards on behalf of all Honda associates. Not only are these motorcycles an engineering showcase for Honda's outstanding R&D, they also represent the tremendous manufacturing capabilities of our associates at the Honda of Marysville Motorcycle Plant, where both the Gold Wing and VTX are made."
