Mitsubishi Motors Reports Best-Ever August

              Record SUV Sales and all-new Lancer Drive Company
                       Up 2.8 Percent Over August 2000

    CYPRESS, Calif., Sept. 4 Mitsubishi Motor Sales of
America, Inc. (MMSA) today reported August sales of 28,317 units, driving the
auto maker to its best-ever August with an increase of 2.8 percent over August
2000.

"We're gaining momentum heading into the fourth quarter and the outlook for the rest of the year is very positive," said President and COO Pierre Gagnon. "The Lancer marketing campaign is now shifting into full gear and we're very encouraged by the strength of SUV sales."

The all-new Lancer compact sedan's stylish good looks, extraordinary range of standard features and incredible value are proving a hit with US consumers. In its first full month in dealer showrooms August Lancer sales totaled 2,727 units and are expected to increase as broadcast television advertising starts this week.

The new television ads for Lancer feature the Barenaked Ladies song "One Week" and are the latest in a series of Mitsubishi commercials well recognized for their distinctive use of music. The ads began airing September 3 on network TV, cable and syndication.

Some figures of note for MMSA's record-breaking August 2001 sales: -- August 2001 sales of 28,317 vehicles, up 2.8 percent over last year's record August sales of 27,540 vehicles -- 2001 year-to-date sales of 206,369 vehicles; 3.6 percent behind last year's record pace of 214,109 vehicles -- Montero Sport had its best-ever August with 6,085 units sold, up 5.2 percent over August 2000 -- Montero had its best-ever August, with sales of 2,177 units sold, up 14.6 percent over August 2000, and up 19.6 percent year-to-date Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America, Inc. was established in 1982 by Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, Tokyo, and markets a full line of vehicles, including coupes, convertibles, sedans and sport utility vehicles.
