CarandDriver.com Also Highlights Listing of 'Cannonball Run(TM)' Cross-Country Rally Racers on http://www.ebaymotors.com SAN JOSE, Calif., Aug. 6 Lagardere Active's CarandDriver.com is listing for sale online two customized race vehicles used by teams participating in the reality TV special "Cannonball Run(TM) 2001." Both vehicles, a 1988 Chevrolet Suburban "monster truck" and a tricked out 1971 Oldsmobile Hearse, are currently up for bid on eBay Motors (http://www.ebaymotors.com). CarandDriver.com's micro-site (http://www.cannonballrun.caranddriver.com) also features behind the scenes "sneak peeks," biographies and a direct link to the promotion on eBay Motors. Bidding has officially begun and will end August 15. "Cannonball Run(TM) 2001" airs on USA Networks August 5-9 at 10 p.m., with a marathon of all episodes on August 12 at 1 p.m. The first custom vehicle up for bid is a modified 1988 Chevrolet Suburban -- a "monster truck" -- driven by the #88 Hog Wild Team, consisting of two weekend road racers from Knoxville, Tennessee and a corporate consultant from New York City. Decked out in camouflage paint, the 5-door, four-wheel-drive Chevy 4x4 has a newly rebuilt V8 engine, automatic transmission and custom wheels and tires. A special trip odometer, overhead lamps, AM/FM cassette, power steering, windows and door locks, plus front and rear air conditioning help civilize the vehicle for its cross-country trek. The second vehicle is a 1971 Oldsmobile Hearse driven by the #71 Castaways Team and comes complete with its own bit of celebrity. The hearse is piloted by "Survivor" series veterans Susan Hawk and Jeff Varner and male fashion model and "Temptation Island" participant Kaya Wittenberg. The vehicle has an automatic transmission, air conditioning, and AM/FM radio and is painted maroon with a custom window border and skull in flames on the exterior. Both vehicles survived the "Cannonball Run(TM) 2001" race with no body damage but some interesting and, thanks to the show's producers, well-documented additional miles. The Suburban currently has 150,918 miles showing on its odometer, while the 30-year-old Oldsmobile Hearse sports 104,176. Lagardere Active, through a relationship with Brock Yates and in coordination with GRB productions, produced "Cannonball Run(TM) 2001." The 3,800-mile cross-country race features 18 contestants in six outrageous vehicles, with a $100,000 prize for the winners. The race is loosely based on the popular 1981 movie "Cannonball Run," produced by "Car and Driver" editor at large, Brock Yates. The movie, starring Burt Reynolds and Dom DeLuise, featured an illegal cross-country race and was based on a real and also unsanctioned race known as the Cannonball Baker Sea-to-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash in which celebrities and private citizens participated in an all out race to the finish once a year from 1971 to 1979.
