Dilley's Mosport win tightens Castrol Cup points chase
Castrol Super Series // Round #3 // Mosport Speedway
'National Fast Freight delivers the EXIDE Batteries 250'

LONDON, ON - Saturday's 'National Fast Freight delivers the EXIDE Batteries
250' at Mosport Speedway produced the third different winner in as many
events this season as former Castrol Super Series champion Mark Dilley
picked up his first CASCAR feature win since the Regina, Saskatchewan event
in 1993.
The veteran racer used everything he had in his bag of tricks to hold off
the Castrol Syntec Intrepid of St. Thomas, ON racer DJ Kennington in the
caution-filled closing laps of the event held on the half-mile Mosport
oval. "When there's five [laps] to go, you gotta do whatever you can," said
Dilley, driver of the NTN Taurus, after the race. "I really wasn't trying
to brake-check that much."
Racers have good memories and the fact that Kennington had a quicker car -
yet opted not to get too physical in his attempts to grab the top position
from Dilley - wasn't lost on either competitor.
Immediately after the race, Kennington emerged from his car and poked his
head inside of Dilley's cockpit. "You owe me one… I was there," said the
runner-up, who wanted to make sure Dilley knew that the #17 Castrol
Intrepid could have forced the issue, possibly endangering both drivers'
good finishes. For his part, Dilley recognized that Kennington had raced
him cleanly and appreciated the good deed.
"Without a guy like DJ running behind you, you'd be a little worried about
it," said Dilley of his closest rival. "But he ran me hard and that's why
he's the great racer he is."
The 'National Fast Freight delivers the EXIDE Batteries 250' was slowed 13
times for a total of 57 laps, with many of the caution periods occurring
late in the 125-mile chase. While the slowdowns gave Kennington several
opportunities to challenge Dilley for the lead, they also robbed
third-place finisher Al Turner of the momentum he needed to mount a charge.
"We just couldn't get any long runs," said the driver of the Blue Streak
Intrepid, who won Round #2 at Peterborough Speedway. "What killed me was
all the restarts. I got my tires all dirty with junk and I just couldn't
get them clean. I didn't realize it was so dirty. When we got running there
again with about 19 to go, I couldn't believe it. I thought I had four flat
tires."
Turning to the points chase, Race #1 winner Kerry Micks' seventh-place
finish was good enough for him to hold onto his lead in the hunt for the
Castrol Cup. The Mt. Albert, ON racer (456 points) sits just 22 markers
ahead of Turner. Dave Jacombs and Dilley are tied for third with 424.
Castrol Super Series veteran Kelly Williams is third (412 pts.) after three
rounds.
