American Honda Sets New May Sales Record

TORRANCE, Calif., June 1 American Honda posted its best-
ever May sales results and the second-best month in the company's history,
according to figures released today by American Honda Motor Co., Inc.
American Honda's May sales of 111,537 rose 5.4 percent compared to year-
ago totals. Year-to-date sales of 491,806 are up 4.3 percent compared to last
year's record setting results. Sales of Honda and Acura passenger cars showed
an increase of 4.8 percent for the month and are up 3.0 percent on the year,
while sales of the light trucks rose 4.8 percent in May and are up 8.5 percent
ahead year-to-date.
"Consumers continue to show faith in Honda and Acura products, even as
overall confidence continues to be challenged by an uncertain economic
picture," said Dick Colliver, American Honda executive vice president of
sales. "We're weathering this storm with a solid lineup of vehicles that
deliver on our promise of class-leading quality, engineering, value and
performance."
Honda Division recorded May sales of 96,953, up 3.6 percent compared to
year-ago results, making May the second best sales month in the Division's
history. Year-to-date sales for the Division rose 1.4 percent compared to
last year to 422,357, boosted by strong sales of the best-selling Accord, up
12.8 percent for the year.
Reaction to rising fuel prices and increased interest in fuel efficient
technologies accounted for record sales of Insight gas-electric hybrid
vehicles in May. May Insight sales rose 137.6 percent compared to year-ago
results to 903 vehicles -- topping the previous record of 573 set in April of
this year. The S2000 roadster also recorded its best-ever month with sales up
106.6 percent to 1,312 for the month.
Acura Division sales rose 19.5 percent to 14,584 in May, boosted by
continuing strong demand for the popular MDX sport-utility vehicle. Acura
sales year-to-date are up 25.9 percent to 69,449 for the first five months of
2001.
