BEI Announces Selection of Its Smart Actuator

SAN FRANCISCO, May 16 BEI Technologies, Inc.
announced its new "Smart Actuator" has been selected for use in
a vehicle Adaptive Cruise Control system. The "Smart Actuator" is a result of
collaboration between BEI's Kimco Magnetics Division and Duncan Electronics
Division and is a key element within BEI's long-term strategy and technology
roadmap, according to Charles Crocker, chairman and chief executive officer.

"Adaptive Cruise Control utilizes advanced technology to allow operation
of a vehicle's cruise control system without the need to reset or resume
cruise control operation. A forward-looking radar detects objects in a
vehicle's path and helps maintain a driver selected spacing between the
vehicle and objects ahead. The driver does not have to disable or reactivate
the system when approaching a vehicle that has slowed down or was traveling at
a slower speed than the reference vehicle," Crocker explained.

The follow-on production order is for a model year 2002 production vehicle
and was awarded to BEI by HE Microwave, LLC, a joint venture of Delphi Delco
Electronics Systems and Raytheon. "The 'Smart Actuator', which integrates
BEI's voice coil and position sensing technologies, offers a packaged solution
for actuation and position feedback in a compact configuration. We are
pleased to provide this enabling technology into what could be a significant
new market opportunity utilizing BEI's core competencies," concluded Crocker.
