Toyota Owners Beware: 1989 Camry Most Stolen Vehicle of 2000

    CHICAGO--March 20, 2001--

CCC Reports Toyota Camry as the Most Stolen Vehicle in the Country for the Fourth Straight Year

For the fourth straight year, imports remained the prime target of automobile theft, with the 1989 Toyota Camry stealing the top spot as the most stolen vehicle in the United States in 2000. In fact, the top four most stolen vehicles were Toyota Camrys, and rounding out the top five was the 1994 Honda Accord EX, according to the annual study of most frequently stolen vehicles conducted by CCC Information Services Inc.
CCC found that in 2000 the 1989 Toyota Camry was stolen more frequently than any other vehicle, followed by the 1990, 1991, and 1988 models respectively. Following the report's four-year trend, imported automobiles were the most popular among car thieves, as 80-percent of the nation's 25 most stolen vehicles were imports--specifically Hondas, Toyotas, and Acuras. The most frequently stolen domestic vehicle in the United States in 2000 was the 1994 Chevrolet C1500 4x2 pickup truck, reflecting the continued growth in the popularity of trucks over the past decade.
"With the volume of claims-related transactions that we process everyday, these findings allow CCC to provide a level of awareness to consumers regarding vehicle thefts on a national and statewide basis," said Mary Jo Prigge, President of CCC-U.S.
CCC identifies the most stolen vehicles based on extensive analysis of total losses submitted to CCC by insurers for valuation. Last year CCC valued, on average, more than 7,000 vehicles each business day for property and casualty insurers throughout North America.

    A Closer Look

CCC also breaks down the rate of theft by state. From coast-to-coast, different states reflected various trends in automobile theft:

- On the west coast in California, results most closely mirrored the national results, with the Toyota Camry claiming the top five slots and with imported cars representing 84% of the 25 most stolen vehicles in the state.
- On the east coast, New York also followed the imported car theft trend, as 24 out of the 25 most stolen vehicles were imports. Nissans were the most frequently stolen type of car, with the 1997 Nissan Maxima GLE claiming the top slot as the most stolen car in New York.
- Up north in Michigan, every one of the top 25 most stolen vehicles were domestics, with the 1999 Dodge Intrepid topping the list. In fact, Dodge was the preferred manufacturer for car thieves in Michigan, claiming eight of the top 25 most stolen slots.
- Down south, car thieves in Texas also preferred domestics, particularly domestic trucks. All but two of the top 25 most stolen vehicles in Texas were trucks, with the 1994 Chevrolet C1500 4x2 claiming the top spot as the most stolen vehicle in the state. Chevrolets were the most popular truck models among car thieves, representing more than half of the 25 most stolen vehicles in Texas.
