West Lafayette, IN-Purdue University and the Big Ten Conference released their plans to serve as primary sponsor on the ST Motorsports entry driven by Purdue graduate Brian Moates for the 2001 ASA ACDelco Series racing season. Details of the agreement wi ll be released as they become available.

This is Purdue’s second venture into motorsports, previously working with an entry in last year’s Indianapolis 500. However, it is their first attempt at a full-time program in stock car racing.

“We’re thrilled to be involved in ASA because of their concentration in the Midwest, running three races in Indiana and in markets of all eleven Big Ten Conference schools,” said Purdue Director of Athletic Promotions Bob Bernard. “We feel there are numer ous marketing as well as educational opportunities that will come from our involvement. It’s exciting to be working with Brian and our goal is to develop a program that will follow him into the NASCAR ranks.”

Moates, 25, has been racing since the age of 10. Beginning in go-karts and mini-sprints, Brian has raced in many different competitive divisions and has accumulated over 700 career starts. In that time, Brian has amassed an impressive record of over 150 wi ns, 200 top-five and 300 top-10 finishes. Moates has also instructed at numerous racing schools, most recently at the Richard Petty Driving Experience.

“I’m thrilled to get a chance to compete in the ASA ACDelco Series,” said Moates. “The level of competition in ASA is among the highest of any series out there. I’m excited to get started. ST Motorsports has a great winning tradition and I know they will b e able to put forth a competitive effort.

“We have a great relationship with Purdue and the Big Ten. I’m honored to represent one of the leading universities and conferences in the country.”

ST Motorsports, owned by Tad Geschickter, currently fields the number 59 Kingsford Charcoal Chevrolet Monte Carlo driven by Rich Bickle in the Busch Grand National Series. Bickle and crew chief Phil Hammer have had past success together in ASA and should p rove to be a good source of knowledge for the new ASA team.
