Murata Electronics Introduces Global Part Numbering System

    SMYRNA, Ga.--Jan. 29, 2001--

Change Ensures Improvements in Corporate Efficiency

In an effort to unify and shorten part numbers on a global basis, Murata Electronics North America (www.murata.com), a world-leading innovator in electronics, today announced the implementation of a new part numbering system.
Murata introduced a single standard to bring about a strict one-on-one correspondence between a production specification and a part number. In addition, Murata has standardized its use of codes for product specifications, such as size and frequency, and made improvements that enable easier electronic data processing (EDP) retrieval. While Murata is changing the part numbers, the performance and specifications of the components will remain the same.
Previously, multiple part numbering systems resulted in different part numbers used for a single product passing through the order and sales process. This new initiative streamlines production and distribution capabilities, greatly increasing efficiencies for Murata's operations and customers around the globe.
This modification to the part numbering system results from the increasing requirements for supply chain management (SCM) and electronic commerce (EC) systems. Using fewer digits and shorter length of part numbers facilitates adaptation of various business systems, especially for general-purpose enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems.
The global unification project is scheduled to begin in June 2001. Since there are several hundreds of thousands of part numbers on hand, this new system requires a great deal of preparatory work and coordination with Murata's overseas facilities. To facilitate this process, Murata is communicating with customers about this mutually beneficial change.
"We see the implementation of the new part numbering system as another example of Murata staying ahead of industry trends and remaining focused on our customers and how we can meet their needs," said Takeshi Iishi, President and CEO.
