NHRA FMDRS: Track Records Fall Again in Final Qualifying at Southern Oregon Dragway

24 September 2000

MEDFORD, Ore.- For the second day in a row the Federal-Mogul Dragsters and
Federal-Mogul Funny Cars reset e.t. and speed track records at Southern
Oregon Dragway. Over 2500 spectators watched in awe as Mark Hentges of
Federal Way, Wash. and John Hyland of Springfield, Ore. not only claimed
the No. 1 qualifying positions in Federal-Mogul Dragster and Funny Car,
respectively, but reset the track records set in yesterday's qualifying.

Current Northwest Division Federal-Mogul Dragster championship points
leader, Hentges lead the pack of eight Federal-Mogul Dragsters that all
qualified with an e.t. of 5.9 seconds or better. Hentges drove his Airtime
Aviation Federal-Mogul Dragster to the quickest e.t. and speed in Southern
Oregon Dragway history with a pass of 5.513 seconds at 255.76 mph. Hentges
broke the e.t track record of 5.592 seconds set yesterday by Brandon
Henkelman of San Jose, Calif. and bettered his own speed record set
yesterday of 251.50 mph. Steve Federlin of Oregon City, Ore. moved up one
spot in his final qualifying attempt to the No. 2 qualifying position with
a run of 5.580 seconds at 254.64 mph.

"The track is in great condition and very fast," said Hentges. "This is a
fast field of cars and its going to take three quality runs tomorrow to
bring home the win. All year my crew has given me a car good enough to win
and I have no doubt tomorrow will be no different."

Long time NHRA Northwest Division Federal-Mogul Funny Car driver, John
Hyland made himself at home on his home track with a track record run in
the final round of qualifying to collect the $1000 Winston Top Qualifier
Award. Hyland made a blistering pass of 5.809 seconds at 245.03 mph to
reset the 5.95 seconds e.t record set by Brian Hough of Eugene, Ore in
1999. Bucky Austin of Fife, Wash and Dan McGlone of Gladstone, Wash. moved
into the No. 2 and No. 3 qualifying positions after stepping up the power
in the final run of qualifying.

Other No. 1 qualifiers include: Brian Hyerstay of Eugene, Ore in
Competition Eliminator, Steve Wann of Modesto, Calif. in Super Stock, and
Sean Cour of Brush Prairie, Wash. in Stock.

Eliminations will begin at Southern Oregon Dragway on Sunday at 8
a.m. Gates open at 7 a.m. Eliminations for Federal-Mogul Dragster and
Funny Car begin at noon.
