Chrysler Announces Problems with Steering Wheels on '91-'92 Minivans and Sundance and Shadow Cars

9 January 1997

Chrysler Notifies Owners of 1991 and 1992 Minivans and Sundance/Shadow Cars
                      to Have Steering Wheels Inspected

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Jan. 7 -- Chrysler Corporation
has notified approximately 675,000 owners of 1991 and 1992
model-year minivans, Dodge Shadow and Plymouth Sundance vehicles to have
dealers inspect the steering wheel for cracks.
Specifically, the recall includes 1991 and 1992 model year Chrysler, Dodge
and Plymouth brand minivans produced from January 1991 through June 1992.
Plymouth Sundance and Dodge Shadow 1991 and 1992 models in the recall include
those with four-cylinder engines and manual transmissions, produced from
July 1990 through June 1992.
In very rare instances, cracks may occur in the steering wheel due to
metal fatigue. Drivers will experience obvious warning with the steering
wheel becoming noticeably loose. Dealers will inspect the steering wheel for
cracks and replace the steering wheel if necessary. If no cracks are
apparent, a retainer plate will be installed where the steering wheel attaches
to the steering column, to prevent the remote possibility of future
separation.
Chrysler Corporation is not aware of any accidents or injuries.
