Steve Petty to Race Trans-Am

OAKLAND Ca. -- Steve Petty of Alamo CA announced today that he is forming a new race team with San Francisco attorney Larry Less to compete in the 1998 NTB Trans-Am Championship Series. Petty will be the driver with Less as the Business Manager and Grant Ingram as Team Manager/Crew Chief. The Oakland-based team will run a two-car effort of 1998 Ford Mustangs with engines by Lozano Brothers Porting and chassis by Riley & Scott. Funding is in place for one car and the team is seeking additional sponsorship to complete the package for the second driver.

In 1990 Petty raced with veteran Trans-Am driver Greg Pickett in SCCA National GT-1 races, winning the 1990 GT-1 National Championship. He then competed in the thousand-entry Richard Petty Star Search, which included NASCAR races in Australia. Petty then joined Pickett's Trans-Am team in 1991 where he became the 1991 Trans-Am Rookie of the Year as well as the 1991 Trans-Am Rising Star, winning the Rising Star of the Weekend at six races.

Petty took a sabbatical from racing in 1992 to handle his business, returning to racing in 1996 to campaign in the North American Touring Car Series. Petty won the Independent Touring Car Championship after winning 11 of 14 races in 1996. He also was awarded the Spirit of the Touring Car Series Award for his team's effort and professional presentation at all the races.

Further announcements will be forthcoming with additional details regarding the team, drivers and other plans for the 1998 racing season which will include other racing series. An extensive testing program is planned.

Dean Case, Ford's Trans-Am Program Manager, noted "We're pleased with having another high quality team racing Ford Mustangs in the Trans-Am series. I believe this team has a solid mechanical basis with Grant Ingram handling the cars and I would expect they will be very competitive."
