Cassie Thain to Race Legend Series in 1998Elk Grove, CA: Veteran outlaw midget champion, Cassie Thain of Elk Grove, California, has signed on to compete in the Young Lions division of Legends car racing in 1998. The four-year veteran of 125, 250 and 500cc midget and outlaw kart racing will compete for Tobacco Free Challenge Racing, a public health program which delivers a positive non-tobacco use message within motorsports. Cassie will compete at Shasta, Ukiah, Lakeport, Altamont and Stockton speedways, hoping to garner enough points to earn an invitation to Charlotte, North Carolina, for the year-end National Championship runoffs for all drivers in Legend car racing."I am very excited about racing Legend cars and earning a chance to race in the year-end championships," Cassie said. "I will be sixteen in June and truly hope to become the first girl to win a NASCAR Cup race" Cassie went on. "Racing is my future, and I am committed to making it happen. My folks, my grandparents, and the folks at Tobacco Free Challenge Racing believe in me. So do I," Cassie concluded. Cassie began racing at the age of ten in box stock dirt karts. Advancing quickly, she won championships in the l25cc division at Lakeport Speedway and 250cc at Carson City, Nevada. In 1997 she missed the 125cc championship at Red Bluff Outlaw winter series by twenty two points after losing the previous season's title by a mere two points. Cassie's hero in racing is NASCAR star, Jeff Gordon. She hopes to emulate the former Vallejo, California, resident and become a super star on the NASCAR circuit. "Jeff once told me that dedicating your life to racing means giving up a lot of your childhood," Cassie said. "He did it, and I will, too, because it is what I want," she went on. The Tobacco Free Challenge Legends car will first see action at Shasta Speedway on April 18. The balance of the schedule will be aimed at earning National points for the Young Lions program, a competition for drivers under 18 years of age.
