ASA: LaFavre and Cywinski
match Martin Record

A quite an important event in ASA history occurred recently without a great deal of notice. Kevin Cywinski, driver of the LaFavre Racing Teams #1 Pontiac Grand Prix equaled a record that was set by Mark Martin in ASA in the 1977-1978 seasons. What an accomplishment to win the Pat Schauer Rookie of the Year award in one year and win the ACDelco ASA Championship the next. To equal a record of a driver of Mark Martins is very dificult.

Cywinski and the LaFavre Racing Teams organization had an incredible year in 1997. Imagine in a twenty race season to have a record of 4 Wins 11 Top Fives 18 Top Tens 2 DNF via Accidents

That kind of accomplishment truly speaks highly of the entire LaFavre organization. It required top equipment. Team owner Scott LaFavre provided the team with the best possible equipment rotating three Tesar Engineering race engines that performed flawlessly all year long. The chassis were from Port City Racing, luckily we only had to go back to them once during the year for a front stub, great service. The entire braking systems were from Coleman Racing Products with pads and a lot of technical advice from Performance Friction and their Director of Motorsports Darrick Dong. Thank you all.

One of the absolutely most exciting races of the year for the LaFavre team was the race of the year at Southern National Speedway in Kenly, NC. Cywinski started from the eigth position and by lap seventy was in second place to a very fast Brandon Sperling, ASA's Most Improved Driver of the Year. After a pit stop Kevin had to pit under green for a flat right front tire. The #1 Pontiac returned to the track two laps down on the high banked, tremendously fast Southern National track. At lap 392 Cywinski stormed by a hard running Gary St. Amant in his Wynn's mount and won the 400 lap event going away. What an achievment to make up two laps on the track and in the pits to win that final race.

Tecumseh Motorsports, the worlds largest Engine and Trans Axle Manufacturer came on board in mid season to sponsor the LaFavre Racing Teams efforts. Dick Melius of that organization did a wonderful job of promoting racing within that company with large gatherings of Tecumseh employees at the Miwaukee and Salem races.

All considered it has been a astounding two years for this two and one half year old race team. Plans are in place for more exciting announcements from this group in the near future.
