BGN: Porter Wins Miami Qualifier

HOMESTEAD, Fla. (Nov. 8,1997) --- Randy Porter led from start to finish in winning a 30-lap qualifying race Saturday that set the final 10 starting positions for the Jiffy Lube 300 on Sunday at the Metro-Dade Homestead Motorsports Complex.

"It was a lot harder than it looked," said Porter. "Yesterday, it looked pretty bleak for myself and my teammate (Dale Shaw), but the team worked real hard and both of us ended up making the field."

Porter, who started the NASCAR Busch Series race from the pole in his Chevrolet, held off a late charge by the Chevy of Tracy Leslie.

Rounding out the top-10 were defending Jiffy Lube champion Kevin Lepage, Michael Waltrip, 1995 winner Dale Jarrett, Ted Christopher, Dale Shaw, Mark Green, Hank Parker, Jr., and Ed Berrier.

Mike McLaughlin will start on the pole Sunday while 1997 Busch Series Champion Randy LaJoie will take the green flag in 19th position. Defending Jiffy Lube Miami 300 champion Kevin Lepage will start 35th.
