Mike McLaughlin Gets BGN Pole

HOMESTEAD, FL: The Busch Grand National drivers will get top billing this weekend as NASCAR's Winston Cup teams prepare for the final race of the season at Atlanta. The Busch Series is Homestead, Fl preparing for the Jiffy Lube 300.

In qualifying held today, Mike McLaughlin changed his setup and beat out Steve Park for the pole position. McLaughlin turned in a lap of 147.7 to claim the top spot. It was a record breaking run. McLaughlin's record was more than 8 mph faster than Bobby Labonte's record. The track has been reconfigured since BGN's last visit to Homestead. McLaughlin's pole was his second of the year and third of his career.

McLaughlin said, "We've been a little bit loose in practice and made an adjustment before qualifying that must have worked. That was the quickest that we've run since we've been here."

Chevrolets grabbed the first 14 spots in the field. 1997 Winston Cup contender, Mark Martin, posted the top speed for Ford.

Randy LaJoie, who wrapped up the championship at the last race, qualified 19th.
