This Month's Featured Driver: Christian Fittipaldi

"I remember everything. De Ferran hit me from behind and I hit (the) wall in front of the pits. The second hit was absolutely unbelievable. I went in head on. I couldn't feel anything in my right leg so I was worried. It hasn't se in yet what this means to my season or the next few races. I'll think about that later." April 6, 1997 after IndyCarnival.

Christian Fittipaldi, nephew of former CART and Formula One champion Emerson Fittipaldi, scored 13 Top 10 finishes in 16 starts and ranked fifth in PPG standings in inaugural season with Newman/Haas. Led 64 of 72 laps at Detroit but late-race bobble dropped him to second. Finished third at Portland and Vancouver. Has new Swift chassis in '97.

The young Fittipaldi competed in go-kart racing beginning in the early 1980s. His first professional ride came in 1988 when he competed in Formula Ford 2000.

He won the Brazilian Formula 3 Championship and finished third in the South American F3 Championship in 1989. The following year he won the South American Formula 3 Championship and finished fourth in British F3. In 1991 he moved to the Formula 3000 series.

Fittipaldi competed in the Formula One World Championship in 1992, driving a Minardi-Lamborghini for 11 races, collecting his first Championship point and finishing 17th in the Formula One standings. He continued in the series and in 1994 drove in all 16 F1 events, recording two Top 10 starts and seven Top 10 finishes. His best finish was fourth at the Pacific and German Grands Prix.
