Career Highlights

Started racing karts at age eight, won 50 times in 75 starts ... Won first SCCA race entered at New Hampshire in 1984 ... Won SCCA national GT-2 driver's championship in Nissan 280ZX Turbo for Newman-Sharp Racing headed by father and Paul Newman in 1986.


  • 1987 - Won SCCA'S GT-1 national driving title in first season of professional racing ... Finished in tie for ninth in SCCA's Escort Endurance class.
  • 1988 - Won third straight SCCA national title and second straight GT-1 crown at runoffs ... Second in SCCA Escort Endurance A Class championship, co-driving Nissan 300ZX with Pepe Pombo, getting six victories ... Ran four Trans Am events ... Drove factory Dodge in Racetruck Challenge Series, tied for seventh overall.
  • 1989 - Finished eighth in Trans Am Drivers Championship with best finishes of third at Cleveland, Brainerd, Mid-Ohio and Topeka driving Newman-Sharp Olds.
  • 1990 - Won first Trans Am race at Detroit, coming from eighth place to the front late in the race ... Teamed with Newman in Newman-Sharp Olds Cutlass Supreme.
  • 1991 - Won six races en route to Trans Am championship, first pro title ... Victories in Mexico, Detroit, Watkins Glen, Trois Rivieres, Mosport Park and Elkhart Lake ... Earned record $190,450, surpassing old mark by nearly $40,000 ... Set seven track records and grabbed eight poles ... Drove Camaro for American Equipment Racing.
  • 1992 - Second in Trans Am points, trailing champion Jack Baldwin by only four ... Won at Mosport, Des Moines, second at Sears Point in 11 starts ... Won Kenwood Fast Five Qualifying championship in Trans Am ranks, getting seven poles, 10 front-row positions.
  • 1993 - PPG Cup: Made debut in Bettenhausen Associates machine at Laguna Seca, finished 22nd, six laps off pace ... Won second Trans Am title in three years with six wins, 11 top-fives and finishing every race lap ... nine poles, track records ... Tested Roger Penske stock car.
  • 1994 - Indy: Was 19th qualifier of month on first time-trial day at 222.091 ... Started 17th, reached 14th on the 22nd lap, finished 16th. PPG Cup: Ran all 16 races with best finish of ninth at Phoenix ... 10th at Elkhart Lake ... 21st in points.
  • 1995 - Indy: Named to A.J. Foyt entry on Day 6 (May 11) ... Waved off attempt on Pole Day, two attempts on third qualifying day ... Qualified with 53 minutes left in time trials at 225.711 ... Started 30th, ran as high as eighth (on Lap 40) beforeTurn 4 accident sidelined him after 74 laps. PPG Cup: No other starts. Other: Ran four SCCA Trans-Am races with best finish of fifth at Road Atlanta.
  • 1996 - Indy: Practiced as high as 235.701 in A.J. Foyt entry, fifth fastest among drivers ... Waved off qualifying attempt with nine minutes left on Pole Day after laps of 231.983, 232.031 when engine problem struck ... Qualified on second time-trial day at 231.201 ... Started 21st, moved to fourth by Lap 36 on Race Day ... Hit Turn 2 wall on Lap 196, ending day in 10th place. IRL: Turn 1 accident with Eddie Cheever ended Indy 200 at Walt Disney World run with 11th-place finish from fourth starting spot ... Got best career Indy car finish of second after starting sixth in Dura-Lube 200 at Phoenix, finishing 8.896 seconds behind winner Arie Luyendyk ... Shared series championship with Buzz Calkins. Other: Won Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona one week after Indy 200 with Doyle Racing Oldsmobile Riley & Scott World Sports Car team and co-drivers Wayne Taylor and Jim Pace.
  • 1996-97 - IRL: Season opener at Loudon was first race for him with No. 1 on his car for A.J. Foyt Enterprises ... Took lead on Lap 183 when electronic trigger problem sidelined leader Tony Stewart and went on for first career victory in IRL cars ... Beat fellow 1996 IRL co-champion Buzz Calkins by 20.4 seconds ... Started seventh, finished 16th at Las Vegas, sidelined by wheel bearing problem ... Ninth in points going into '97 part of schedule ... Started fourth, finished fourth at Orlando with highest finishing Dallara chassis, moved to third in points, 11 behind leader Mike Groff.
