Dale Earnhardt is THE GODFATHER of NASCAR racing. He is the winningest active driver. Though many fans are not fond of Dale's driving style, few can dispute his winning record. I have been a racing fan for over 25 years and can tell when a driver truly "lives and loves" his sport. Dale is one of those unique individuals. The week prior to the running of the Brickyard 400 this year, Dale was involved in a frightening crash at Talledega. The resulting injuries forced him to let a relief driver into his car after only 6 laps of racing at Indianapolis. When Dr. Jerry Punch (ABC pit announcer) tried to interview Dale... he was speechless... in tears. This was not from the pain of his injuries.... It was from the heartbreak of not being able to compete in the richest, (and largest attended) race on the NASCAR circuit. I have only seen one other competitor exhibit this kind of emotion when they knew that they were not going to compete at Indianapolis.... That man was A.J. Foyt upon his retirement from Indy Car Racing. If you think that Dale doesn't have a heart, then think again.... he has one of the biggest in the sport.
