Career Highlights

Won two poles and had posted third and fourth-place finishes as rookie in European Formula Vee series, seventh in points ... In 1973 in Formula Ford 1600 series, won five races, finished second twice, third twice and fourth once, good for second in Dutch championship and capturing Firestone Trophy ... Drove outdated Ensign in German Open Formula 3 championship in 1974, with best finish of 11th in 66-car field at Nurburgring ... Also posted win and third in two Formula Ford races in 1974 ... In 10 Formula Vee races in 1975, posted two seconds, two thirds and a sixth ... At European Championship at Zandvoort in 1975, ran friend's Formula Ford and won title.
1976 - Finished fourth in Dutch and fifth in European Formula Ford 1600 championships ... One win in Formula Ford ... Competed in four Super Vee events with victory at Hockenheim.

1977 - Won European Formula Super Vee and European Western Zone titles, with total of nine victories, five seconds and a third ... One of wins was in Formula Ford 2000 event at Zandvoort.

1978 - Became third driver in Racing Team Holland stable in European Formula 3 series ... Got one pole, one track record, two fifths and three sixths ... Won two of three starts in Super Vee ranks.

1979 - Ran an Argo for Racing team Holland in Formula 3, finished twice behind Alain Prost in France and at Zandvoort ... At Zolder, had pole and won heat, only to give up second-place finish when tire punctured in championship final ... Won three of five European Super Vee starts.

1980 - Finished second behind John Nielsen with Argo JMI in Super Vee series ... Won two races and finished in top three on 14 occasions.

1981 - Came to U.S. to drive March for Buncel/Driftwood in Bosch Super Vee series ... Finished fourth in points with three third-place efforts.

1982 - Returned to European Super Vee Series, finished second, third and fifth in five races with a Ralt RTI.

1983 - Back to U.S. to drive Anson Super Vee for Viking Racing with best finish of fourth at Cleveland.

1984 - PPG Cup: Made Indy car debut Aug. 5 at Elkhart Lake and finished eighth. Other: Won Super Vee championship.

1985 - Indy: Qualified for first "500" at 206.004, started 26th ... Flagged in seventh, named Rookie of the Year. PPG Cup: Ran 11 other races with best finish of fifth at Cleveland ... Named series Rookie of the Year.

1986 - Indy: Accident in Turn 4 on Lap 194 brought out caution to create restart which led to closest three-car finish in Speedway history, with Bobby Rahal outlasting Kevin Cogan, Rick Mears ... Qualified for 19th starting spot, finished 15th. PPG Cup: Finished 15th in points with best finishes of sixth at Phoenix, Toronto.

1987 - Indy: Qualified at 208.337 for seventh starting spot ... Ran as high as third ... Ran over tire during pit stop on Lap 125, which damaged right front suspension, sidelining him. PPG Cup: Ran full circuit and completed more miles than any other driver ... Best finish of third at Phoenix, finished seventh in points ... Named STP Most Improved Driver.

1988 - Indy: Sixth fastest qualifier at 213.611 ... Running second at Lap 50 but five pit stops in next 17 laps for fuel and tires and to replace front wing dropped him out of contention ... Flagged in 10th after 196 laps. PPG Cup: Ran full circuit ... Led 33 laps at Phoenix, 53 laps at Portland ... Best finish a second at Portland ... 14th in points.

1989 - Indy: Qualified at 214.883, started 15th ... Fell out after 123 laps with engine trouble, finished 21st. PPG Cup: Ran full circuit with best finish of third at Portland, 10th in points. Other: Co-drove with Geoff Brabham and Chip Robinson in Nissan GTP-GXT to win 12 Hours of Sebring March 18.

1990 - Indy: Became second first-time winner in a row at Indy, also getting first Indy win for Team Shierson ... Also his first championship victory, coming in 76th career start ... Qualified for first front-row starting spot, third, at 223.304 ... First took lead on 93rd lap, took over for good on Lap 168 ... Received record winner's share of $1,090,940 ... Set record average for 500 miles of 185.981. PPG Cup: Ran full circuit with best other finish of fourth at Meadowlands ... Finished eighth in points.

1991 - Indy: Had reached 225.649 in practice, but waited till end of first qualifying day for shot at pole and rain hit before he could qualify ... Made field on second day at 223.881 for 14th starting spot ... On Race Day, charged to fastest lap of race at 222.178 on Lap 109 ... Reached third at 450-mile mark and finished there, one lap back. PPG Cup: Won Phoenix and Nazareth events, second at Michigan ... Led most laps at Phoenix and was fourth among season lap leaders with 207 ... Sixth in points.

1992 - Indy: Set one-lap record of 229.305 and four-lap record of 229.127 as first qualifier of the month, both later broken ... Was third best among drivers in practice with lap of 232.654 ... On Race Day, stayed in the top five throughout the early going and was second to Michael Andretti at the 300-mile mark ... Remained second at 130 laps, but hit wall on the 137th lap of the race in Turn 4 to end his day, finishing 15th. PPG Cup: Started fourth, finished 14th at Michigan in only other race.

1993 - Indy: After waving off earlier on a lap of 215.254, knocked Mario Andretti off pole with qualifying run of 223.967, choosing to wait until 5:01 p.m. to complete the run ... Led 14 laps of race after Raul Boesel led from the green ... Along with Emerson Fittipaldi, got past Nigel Mansell on late restart to finish second to Fittipaldi by 2.862 seconds. PPG Cup: Ran all 16 races ... Indy best finish, had thirds at Michigan, Laguna Seca ... Eighth in points.

1994 - Indy: Joined Indy Regency team, qualified on first time-trial day at 223.673 ... Started eighth, reached fourth on Lap 17 ... Finished 18th after engine failure ended day after 179 laps. PPG Cup: Ran all 16 races with best finish of second at Michigan ... Also sixth at Vancouver, Laguna Seca ... 17th in points.

1995 - Indy: Reached 233.281 miles an hour on Opening Day, fastest-ever first-day speed ... Led speed chart first three days, increased to 234.107 on Day 3, fastest unofficial lap in Speedway history ... Also led on Day 5 and on Day 7, reached 234.913 ... Was fourth off the line to attempt qualification, had four-lap average of 231.031 ... Menard teammate Scott Brayton later took pole, leaving Luyendyk to start second ... On Race Day, led Laps 10-16 ... Stalled on pit road on Lap 29, fell two laps down, but worked way back to seventh on lead lap at end. PPG Cup: Started 20th, finished 25th at Phoenix in only other outing.

1996 - Indy: In Jonathan Byrd/Treadway entry, engaged in shootout during practice in days leading up to Pole Day with Team Menard drivers ... Reached 237.774 two days before qualifying, then set all-time Speedway practice mark of 239.260 the day before Pole Day ... Waited until 23 minutes remained in Pole Day qualifying to record run of 233.390 to bump Tony Stewart off pole ... Car was found to be seven pounds under weight so run was disallowed ... Re-qualified on second time-trial day at track record average of 236.986, also set track one-lap standard of 237.498 on fourth lap ... Started 20th, ran as high as second ... Tangled with Eliseo Salazar in pit exit warmup lane, causing mechanical problems which ended his day in 16th position. IRL: Gearbox problems ended Indy 200 at Walt Disney World run with 14th-place finish after starting inside second row ... Grabbed pole for Dura-Lube 200 at Phoenix with track record speed of 183.599 ... Led four times for 122 laps en route to his second Indy car victory at Phoenix, posting fastest lap of race on Lap 11 of 173.152, fastest Indy car racing lap in track history ... Finished seventh in points.

1996-97 - IRL: Qualified third fastest for season opener in Treadway Racing entry ... Led Laps 7-13, 38-41 during race ... Coasted into pits on Lap 152 to change broken right front upright...Finished 13th, 30 laps off pace ... Established track record of 226.491 miles per hour in getting pole at Las Vegas ... Led first 25 laps, accident in Turn 2 on Lap 78 ended day in 20th ... 12th in points going into '97 part of schedule ... Was first driver to test a new IRL car in November at both Phoenix and Walt Disney World.
