1998 IHRA National Event Schedule AnnouncedBRISTOL, Tenn. -- In a much anticipated announcement, International Hot Rod Association officials released the 1998 Snap-on Tools Championship Drag Racing Series schedule Wednesday at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) trade show in Las Vegas, Nev. The schedule features 11 races, combining traditional favorites and two new facilities. Mississippi's Lake Slip Away Dragway and Red River Raceway in Louisiana will host inaugural events on their brand new quarter-mile drag strips, giving IHRA a strong presence in the deep south. Traditional venues such as Darlington International Dragway, Bristol Dragway, Norwalk Raceway Park and Maryland International Raceway will anchor the circuit once again. In addition, Cordova Dragway Park and the Mid-Michigan Motorplex will return to host second-annual events. Ohio Valley Raceway will once again host the biggest Sportsman-only national event. Two events on the schedule will be announced at a later date. For the first time in the history of the sanctioning body, no tracks on the schedule will host second dates. The season will begin Mar. 27-29 at a location still to be announced. Darlington (S.C.) International Dragway will host the second race May 1-3. Lake Slip Away Dragway will make its IHRA debut with the Super Nationals on Memorial Day Weekend, May 22-24. Bristol (Tenn.) Dragway's legendary Spring Nationals will be held on its traditional June 5-7 weekend. Cordova (Ill.) Dragway Park will host the Summer Nationals July 3-5, followed by the all-sportsman Holley Nationals at Louisville, Ky.'s Ohio Valley Raceway July 24-26. Mid-Michigan Motorplex's Northern Nationals will mark the season's half-way point, July 31-Aug. 2. Another event still to be announced is scheduled for Aug. 14-16, followed by IHRA's most prestigious event, the 21st annual World Nationals at Norwalk Raceway Park. The President's Cup Nationals at Maryland International Raceway in Budds Creek, Md. have been moved from its traditional spring spot on the schedule to Sept. 25-27, and will play a key role in determing IHRA World Champions. The new Red River Raceway in Shreveport, La. will host the IHRA Finals, bringing the season to a close Oct. 15-18.
