Candidates for Two Prestigious NHRA Awards Named


GLENDORA, Calif. -- Rookie standouts Gary Scelzi and Randy Anderson are candidates for both the NHRA Winston Rookie of the Year Award and the Automobile Club of Southern California Road to the Future Award.

Scelzi and Anderson are among four candidates for the Rookie of the Year and among five nominees for the Road to the Future Award, given to the NHRA competitor who appears destined for future greatness. Both awards will be presented at the NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series Awards Ceremony Nov. 10 at the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts in Cerritos, Calif.

NHRA Winston Top Fuel points leader Scelzi has won five races in the Team Winston Dragster. Anderson has won two Funny Car races in the Parts America Pontiac Firebird.

Other candidates for the two awards are:

*NHRA Winston Rookie of the Year Award: Cristen Powell, Royal Purple Motor Oil Top Fuel Dragster; Tim Wilkerson, JCIT Pontiac Firebird Funny Car.

*Automobile Club of Southern California Road to the Future Award: Ron Capps, Copenhagen Chevrolet Camaro Funny Car; Matt Hines, Vance & Hines Suzuki GSXR Pro Stock Motorcycle; Tom Martino, MaMa Rosa's Pizza Pontiac Firebird Pro Stock.
