De Ferran On Detroit PoleDETROIT: The CART series will race on Detroit's Belle Isle this weekend. The race may already be over. The passing areas at this temporary road course are as scarce as strands of hair on Bobby Rahal's head. Qualifying is very important. Gil De Ferran may have won the race when he posted the fastest time during qualifying. All the teams scrambled for the "option tires" in an attempt to get the best starting spot. De Ferran posted his fast time during the last qualifying session of the day. De Ferran said "We all knew we only had one good lap in the tires. We will have to manage the tires throughout the race." He beat out Scott Pruett who had posted the fast time yesterday. Pruett finds himself starting in the second spot for the annual event. Michael Andretti was charging late in the K-mart Texaco Havoline car. He charged a little too hard. Andretti slid into the tire barrier as the session came to a close. Mark Blundell and Paul Tracy also had "minor" incidents. There were seven cars that broke the old track record set by Nigel Mansell in 1994. One car that did not break the record was Al Unser Jr. The down on his luck Penske driver had an engine failure during qualifying. He will start 16th. Roberto Moreno turned heads as he qualified fast enough to start third. Alex Zanardi, rookie of the year in 1996, will start fourth.
