Started racing go-karts, mini-bikes, snowmobiles at age five ... New York State Quarter Midget champion, 1978 ... Northeast Quarter Midget champion, 1979 ... Started racing Formula Fords in 1980 and won Canadian Formula Ford title in 1981 ... Rookie of the Year with a victory in Bosch Super Vee championship in 1982, finished third in points ... Ran British Formula 3 series in 1983, won race at Thuxton, finished third in points. Ran European Formula 3 series ... Won five of six events in New Zealand Formula Atlantic series, finished second in points.


  • 1985 - Returned to Super Vees, won four races, seven poles and finished second in points.
  • 1986 - Won pole, set track record, teamed with John Andretti for win at Watkins Glen in IMSA GTP ranks ... Drove BMW 325E to victory in six-hour endurance race at Sears Point.
  • 1987 - Indy: Qualified at 208.117 as fastest rookie qualifier ... Started 28th, dropped out after 34 laps with engine problem. PPG Cup: Ran four other races with best finish of 16th at Mid-Ohio.
  • 1988 - Started 13 IMSA GTP races, finished eight times in top five, 12 times in top 10.
  • 1989 - Indy: Qualified for second "500" at 214.279, started 31st ... Ran steadily to seventh-place finish, completing 192 laps. Other: Started nine Camel GTP races in IMSA ranks, top five.
  • 1990 - Co-drove Jaguar XJR-12 with Jan Lammers, Andy Wallace to win 24 Hours of Daytona in IMSA Camel GTP ranks ... Won GTP in Jaguar XJR-10 July 29 at Portland ... Third in GTP.
  • 1991 - PPG Cup: No Indy car races. Other: Won five IMSA GTP races, at South Florida Fairgrounds, Road Atlanta, Mid-Ohio, Laguna Seca and Elkhart Lake en route to third in point standings behind Geoff Brabham and Chip Robinson.
  • 1992 - PPG Cup: No Indy car races. Other: Teamed with Scott Pruett, Scott Goodyear and David Brabham to win 24 Hours of Daytona in a Jaguar ... Also posted IMSA GTP victories at Road Atlanta, Mid-Ohio ... Second in points behind Juan Manuel Fangio II.
  • 1993 - Indy: Made field on third qualifying attempt on third day as 33rd qualifier of month ... Accidents on May 12, May 16, slowed progress for month ... Drove from 28th starting position to 15th, three laps off pace. PPG Cup: No other starts.
  • 1994 - Indy: Was assigned to Bernstein team s backup ride on Day 13 (May 19) ... Qualified with 18 minutes left on third time-trial day at 223.817 to fill field as Mike Groff s machine was withdrawn during his run ... For race, teammate Scott Goodyear, who had been bumped, took over car and he served as first alternate in Goodyear s bumped machine. PPG Cup: Ran three races driving for A.J. Foyt, finishing 19th in Australia, 12th at Phoenix, 14th at Long Beach ... 31st in points.
  • 1995 - Indy: Qualified on third and final attempt in Jonathan Byrd s/Bryant entry with 41 minutes left in qualifying at four lap average of 225.135 mph ... Started 32nd, ran as high as 12th, finished 23rd, sidelined by Turn 2 accident. PPG Cup: No other starts.
  • 1996 - Indy: Named to drive Galles entry and practiced as high as 234.736 ... Became month's fifth qualifier on Pole Day at 232.882 with only Mercedes engine in field ... Started in middle of front row, led five times for 46 laps, second-highest of any driver ... On Lap 169 restart, brushed inside wall on front straight attempting to pass Eliseo Salazar ... Finished second to Buddy Lazier by .695 of a second. IRL: 26th in points. PPG Cup: Ran 5 races with the best finish of 12th at Michigan. Other: Teamed with Manuel Reuter of Germany and Alexander Wurtz of Austria to win 24 Hours of LeMans in TWR Porsche at average speed of 124.66.
  • 1996-97 - IRL: Was second driver to test new IRL cars at Phoenix in December with Galles Racing after Arie Luyendyk's initial sessions ... Suffered head, neck injuries in Turn 3 accident during practice at Orlando Jan. 24.
