CASCAR: CASCAR Castrol Super Series East title to be decided in New Brunswick finale
9 September 1999
KOMOKA, ON - The CASCAR Castrol Super Series East will crown its new champion this weekend at New Brunswick Int'l Speedway. This year's CARQUEST 200, at the Fredericton-area oval, will be the third annual visit of Canada's top stock car series to one of the Maritimes' top racing facilities. Heading into the ninth and final Eastern Series race of the season, Don Thomson Jr. of Hamilton, ON holds a 22 point lead over Pete Vanderwyst in the championship chase. Thomson's Home Hardware Chevrolet has gathered three Eastern series checkered flags so far in '98 (plus one National win) but has encountered a few problems in the most recent events, which have caused his once seemingly insurmountable lead to diminish considerably. "We got close on the National, but that's the way it goes," said Thomson, following the CARQUEST 300 at Delaware. He ended up second in the National rankings - to Peter Gibbons - and has more than enough motivation to put in a good performance in Fredericton. "We're going to do it at New Brunswick." Vanderwyst, on the other hand, got off to a relatively rough start this past spring and has put together several consistent finishes to narrow the gap. "We've had a really good season and reached a bunch of our goals so far. We've sat on the pole and won a race, so now the thing is to win a CASCAR title and we're going to do everything in our power to be ready. That would mean a lot." Time trials for the CARQUEST 200 commence Saturday (Sept. 11) at 2:00 p.m., with CASCAR's heat races scheduled for 4:00. Also on the Saturday card are Street Stock and Sportsman races. The CASCAR autograph session starts Sunday morning (Sept. 12) at noon. The CARQUEST 200 will take the green flag at 2:00 p.m. Fraser returns A definite highlight of this weekend's CARQUEST 200 will be the second annual appearance of Maritime racing star Scott Fraser. The Shubenacadie, NS racer currently leads the Int'l Pro Stock Challenge (IPSC) point standings and will surely electrify the crowd again this year behind the wheel of a Whitlock Motorsports Ford Taurus. Last year, the young charger started deep in the CASCAR pack at New Brunswick Int'l Speedway and climbed as high as eighth in the field before mechanical problems knocked him out of contention. CARQUEST 200 Notes: Last year's CARQUEST 200 at New Brunswick Int'l Speedway (NBIS) was the site of several 'firsts'. Ron Beauchamp of Windsor, ON posted a sixth place finish in the final Eastern race of the season and captured his first-ever CASCAR title (East) by 50 points over Dave Whitlock, who had won his third National title the week before at Delaware Speedway Park... Beauchamp's Eastern title was the first Super Series championship for longtime series participant and supporter Daimler Chrysler... The '98 CARQUEST 200 was also memorable for being the last CASCAR Castrol Super Series event for Canadian racing legend Earl Ross. The Ailsa Craig, ON resident quietly announced, prior to the green flag, that he would be hanging up his helmet - for the last time - following the event. Ross was at the CARQUEST 300 at Delaware last weekend and is excited about going to Martinsville Speedway at the end of this month for the Winston Cup race. It was 25 years ago this fall that Ross earned the distinction of becoming the only non-American to win a race in NASCAR's elite division; a record that stands to this day... An indication of the competitive nature of the CASCAR Castrol Super Series is evidenced by where the '98 champions stand in the '99 rankings. Last year's National champion, Dave Whitlock, ended up seventh this year. Beauchamp is ninth in the Eastern standings with one race remaining, and defending Western champ, Wade Lee, is 13th with only one race to go - at Race City Motorsport Park - on Sept. 18... Last year's CARQUEST 200 winner, Alex Nagy, finished fourth in last weekend's CARQUEST 300 at Delaware but will not be making the trip to New Brunswick to defend his race victory... The Sept. 12 race at NBIS will decide the winner of the Blue Streak Hygrade Motor Products 'CARQUEST Bounty'; a $10,000 points fund 'mini-series' that will see $4,500 go to the top points gathering team in the three CARQEST-backed Eastern races (Ste. Croix, QC - June 5 // Delaware, ON - Sept. 5 // Fredericton, NB - Sept. 12)... *** Eastern Point Standings after Round #8 of 9 / As of September 7, 1999: 1. #4 Don Thomson (Hamilton, ON / 1242 points / Chevrolet); 2. #77 Pete Vanderwyst (St Thomas, ON / 1220 / Chevrolet); 3. #02 Kerry Micks (Mt Albert, ON / 1176 / Ford); 4. #33 Neil Fair (Ancaster, ON / 1168 / Chevrolet); 5. #17 DJ Kennington (St Thomas, ON / 1146 / Dodge); 6. #1 Peter Gibbons (Stouffville, ON / 1138 / Chevrolet); 7. #98 Dave Whitlock (Petrolia, ON / 1096 / Ford); 8. #31 Kelly WIlliams (Inglewood, ON / 1082 / Ford); 9. #60 Ron Beauchamp Jr (Windsor, ON / 1074 / Dodge); 10. #64 Mark Dilley (Barrie, ON / 1066 / Ford); 11. #14 John Fitzpatrick (Ayr, ON / 1056 / Chevrolet); 12. #67 Derrick Tiemersma (Newmarket, ON / 1040 / Pontiac); 13. #51 Al Long (Woodlawn, ON / 1016 / Chevrolet); 14. #76 Al Turner (Barrie, ON / 996 / Dodge); 15. #66 Robin Buck (Oakville, ON / 980 / Pontiac); 16. #8 Ted McIntyre (Windsor, ON / 960 / Dodge); 17. #O4 Andy Farr (Chesterfield, MI / 954 / Dodge); 18. #22 Scott Steckly (Milverton, ON / 936 / Pontiac); 19. #5 Nik Lapcevich (Hamilton, ON / 926 / Chevrolet); 20. #25 Jim Lapcevich (Hamilton, ON / 904 / Ford); 21. #99 Scott Watkins (Milton, ON / 846 / Pontiac); 22. #90 Brad Jacques (Mt Brydges, ON / 834 / Dodge); 23. #97 Rob Neely (Milton, ON / 832 / Dodge); 24. #94 Mark Graham (Odessa, ON / 824 / Chevrolet); 25. #52 Bill Rowse Jr. (Corunna, ON / 800 / Chevrolet)
