National Safety Month - Fortune 500 Company Eliminates Distracted Driving

Today marks the start of National Safety Month.  And this June, a Fortune 500 company is working to improve the safety of it’s workers and the people who live in the communities it serves by eliminating distracted driving.

According to the National Safety Council, there were more than 40,200 deadline accidents in 2017.  That’s up 14% since 2014 and the biggest two year increase in 50 years.  Many of those traffic fatalities are blamed on distracted driving, like texting behind the wheel.  In fact, distracted driving claimed 3,477 lives in 2015 alone.

NiSource, the parent company of Columbia Gas and NIPSCO, is one of few companies that have eliminated mobile phone use while driving.  With more than 60 million miles driven by 8,000 NiSource employees on company business, it decided to take a stand on distracted driving.

Serving as a great example for other employers, the National Transportation Safety Board recently asked NiSource to join a national discussion and event, “Act to End Deadly Distractions (https://www.ntsb.gov/news/events/Pages/2017-distraction-RT.aspx) .�??
