Study: Millennials Driving Driverless Demand

Hi Larry,

Given your experience covering automotive industry dynamics, I wanted to reach out with a just released study on millennials’ (Gen Y) and centennials’ (Gen Z) preferences towards autonomous vehicles. The autonomy revolution is clearly on the horizon, but who knew so many millennials and centennials are ready to hand over the keys today?

The just released Autolist.com study (https://www.autolist.com/audi-a4#section=news&s=a)  of 8,576 vehicle owners nationwide shows that millennials, centennials and men are key drivers of autonomous vehicle demand. Among the detailed results:

* Millennials and centennials are most desirous of autonomous vehicles, with 48.7% and 44.5% (respectively) indicating their desire to buy an autonomous vehicle today.

** Centennial generation men indicated the most desire (59.6%), whereas traditionalist generation women indicated the least desire (13.3%).

* Around a quarter of centennials (20.9%) and millennials (18.9%) trust complete autonomy technology today (level 5), but that number increases to around 40% when forecasting whether they will trust it 10 years from now.

** All generations saw between a 18-23 percentage point increase forecasting whether they will trust it 10 years from now.

* Male and female drivers of Audi vehicles were among the most trusting of level two autonomous technology or above, at 75.0% and 74.3% respectively.

** Male drivers of Acuras were the most trusting at 78.7%.

Study: Millennials and Centennials Driving Driverless Demand

San Francisco, 5/18/2017 — The automotive buyer intelligence firm Autolist.com (https://www.autolist.com)  today released a study showing that a large number of millennials (Gen Y) and centennials (Gen Z) are interested in buying an autonomous vehicle today.

The Autolist.com analysis (https://www.autolist.com/audi-a4#section=news&s=a) , based on a survey of 8,576 vehicle owners, found that millennials and centennials are most desirous of autonomous vehicles, with 48.7% and 44.5% (respectively) indicating a desire to buy an autonomous vehicle today. Additionally, centennial generation men indicated the most desire (59.6%), followed by millennial generation men (53.2%). By contrast, traditionalist generation (ages 70+) women indicated the least desire (13.3%).

In terms of trusting autonomous technology, around a quarter of centennials (20.9%) and millennials (18.9%) trust complete autonomy technology today (level 5). However, that number increases to around 40% when respondents were asked to forecast whether they will trust it 10 years from now. Additionally, all generations saw between a 18-23 percentage point increase in trust forecasting 10 years out.

Autolist also looked at trust in level 2, semi-autonomous technology today and found patterns in trust based on the make of the vehicle one drives. To that end, male and female drivers of Audi vehicles were among the most trusting of level 2 autonomous technology or above, at 75.0% and 74.3% respectively. Overall, the most trusting group was male drivers of Acuras at 78.7%.

As the data demonstrates, automakers cannot get viable autonomous vehicles to the market fast enough - the demand is here to stay, with millennials and centennials leading the way.
