SEOUL, South Korea—Hyundai Mobis (KRX:012330) developed the Integrated Body Unit (IBU) for the first time in Korea, and began to mass-produce it for the second in the world at its Jincheon Plant from this month. The IBU integrates the 4 electronic control units (ECU), i.e. BCM, smart key, TPMS, and PAS, into one. Hyundai Mobis has been in full-scale mass production since last month after undergoing the technology and mass-production development process for almost 4 years from 2013.

The biggest advantage of system integration is that it can greatly reduce the weight, size and cost of the ECU. Compared to applying all four systems, the IBU is 60% lighter, 50% smaller and 40% cheaper. As the size and number of parts were reduced, it is now possible to secure extra space during automotive design, thereby further enhancing the ease of design. As interference with other devices and errors due to electromagnetic waves can be minimized, the system control speed has been improved as well.

In particular, Hyundai Mobis developed the IBU based on AutoSar, the international standard platform for automotive software, and is planning to begin mass-producing it in the first half of this year. The IBU is the first AutoSar-based electronic component developed and mass-produced by Hyundai Mobis. Hyundai Mobis is currently developing 20 or more AutoSar-based electronic components.

As a result, Hyundai Mobis secured the AutoSar-based development capabilities, and is now more confident about penetrating the global market. If parts are standardized and developed based on the AutoSar platform, technical scalability and compatibility will also be increased. Even if the same parts are developed by different companies, it will be much easier to universally apply them to various models, and quality verification and security can be further enhanced. Accordingly, global automakers are recently emphasizing the importance of parts makers’ AutoSar-based development capabilities.

“As the use of electronic components in automobiles has been accelerated, the number of ECUs has greatly increased, and development of integrated ECUs emerged as a major challenge for the parts industry,” said Mr. Seo-Goo Cho, head of the DAS Components Development Center of Hyundai Mobis. “With the mass-production of the IBU, Hyundai Mobis will accelerate the development of integrated ECUs for DAS, the core technology of cutting-edge automobiles of the future.”

Meanwhile, Hyundai Mobis acquired ISO 26262, the international standard for functional safety, for the MOBIS Electronic Development Process (MEDP), at the end of last year. This process is an R&D system and work standard that Hyundai Mobis developed on its own in relation to the development of electronic components.

Glossary

AutoSar: AutoSar stands for AUTomotive Open System Architecture, which was established by German automakers and parts makers to ensure software stability at a time when the use of electronic components has been accelerating at great speed, and the quantity and complexity of software has increased dramatically. Currently, it has become the standard software platform for the global automotive industry.
