LONDON—Technavio has announced the top five leading vendors in their recent global gasoline particulate filter (GPF) market for passenger cars report. To calculate the market size, the report considers the bottom-up approach where the volume of the vehicles equipped with GPF has been taken into consideration.

The rapid uptake of gasoline direct injection (GDI) technology by all original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) would require for all vehicles to install exhaust aftertreatment systems such as GPF.

GDI is expected to increase by 40 million units by the end of 2025. With the implementation of Euro 6c vehicular particulate emission standards by 2017, all GDI cars would require maintaining a strict check on their emission levels.

Government regulations all over the world mostly emphasize on particulate emissions from diesel engines but with the increased use of GDI, stringent regulations are to be implemented on emission reduction from gasoline engines as well.

Competitive vendor landscape

The global GPF market for passenger cars is highly competitive. The market has a limited number of well-established vendors. Key vendors in the market are currently growing their customer base and are increasing their investments in R&D. The competitive environment in the market should intensify with advances in technology and government regulations.

Most of the advances in the GPF market for passenger cars will come by 2017 due to the implementation of Euro 6c standards. Volkswagen's so-called defeat device installed in their vehicles to manipulate emission levels brought out a serious flaw in the emission testing system. The test method proved to be outdated, and it called for new emission tests to be introduced, which are more representative of on-road conditions. This has resulted in a change in the testing system with stricter implementation.

OEMs are facing pressure to maintain effective control over the emission levels of their cars to successfully pass the scrutiny. Mercedes-Benz has already announced the introduction of GPF in their S-Class variants. OEMs in the America’s are expected to begin installation of GPF into their vehicles to comply with the emission regulations,” says Praveen Kumar, a lead powertrain analyst from Technavio.
