U-Haul of Intown Offers More Self-Storage Options to Washington, D.C.

WASHINGTON, Sept. 21, 2016 -- District of Columbia residents have called on their local U-Haul store at 2215 5th St. NE for their moving and self-storage needs since 1993.

U-Haul Moving & Storage of Intown will now be able to offer additional self-storage options to our nation's capital with the recent acquisition of a 2.55-acre abutting property that previously housed a USPS mail equipment shop. U-Haul is currently building more than 600 self-storage units at this location.

"I had my eye on this property when I came to the area in 2013," U-Haul Company of Metro D.C. president Amanda Kirsch said. "When the 'for sale' sign went up in the window, we jumped at the opportunity."

The three-story, 96,000-square-foot building was constructed in 1918 and was home to Barber & Ross Structural Iron Shop, Lumber Mill & McLeod Stone Company and the USPS.

In addition to offering customers more self-storage options, the new acquisition will allow for a designated receive-and-dispatch area to make the rental process easier. U-Haul Moving & Storage of Intown already offers truck and trailer rentals, moving supplies, boxes, towing equipment and professional hitch installation, truck sales, after-hours drop-off and more.

Stop by U-Haul Moving & Storage of Intown or call (202) 269-1200. Hours of operation are from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Thursday and Saturday; 7 a.m.-8 p.m. Friday; and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday. Reserve equipment at uhaul.com or contact Reservations at 1-800-GO-UHAUL.

The acquisition of the 5th St. NE abutting property was driven by U-Haul Company's Corporate Sustainability initiatives: U-Haul supports infill development to help local communities lower their carbon footprint. Our adaptive reuse of existing buildings reduces the amount of energy and resources required for new-construction materials and helps cities reduce their unwanted inventory of unused buildings.

"Our sustainability plan was a big factor in acquiring this beautiful, historic building," Kirsch explained. "The community is excited to see that U-Haul will be bringing more self-storage and moving options to this growing area by renovating an existing structure."

U-Haul is a proud sponsor of the 75th anniversary of Pearl Harbor Day. The Company is honoring Pearl Harbor survivors and World War II veterans by supporting the events in Oahu commemorating the Dec. 7, 1941 attack. Founded by a WWII Navy veteran and his wife, U-Haul makes veterans a focus of its charitable works and has been recognized repeatedly as one of the top veteran-friendly U.S. employers.
