(June 19) -- Richie Crampton and the Lucas Oil Top Fuel dragster team may have turned the corner during the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals on Sunday at Bristol Dragway. Crampton won a first-round matchup against Leah Pritchett, and though he lost in the second round, the Morgan Lucas Racing team have a good direction with a new-to-them race car. "Obviously, the first round was a good run," Crampton said. "The second run was on a pretty good pass as well until it hurt a piston. They're all little things that (crew chief) Aaron (Brooks) can tune around. "We have a lot more confidence going to Norwalk now. I'm getting more comfortable in the driver's seat of Morgan's car, and they guys are still doing a good job. We'll get it back." After some early season struggles, Crampton took over MLR chassis 001, a car previously driven by team owner Morgan Lucas. He qualified No. 12 in Bristol but took a small step forward in qualifying. Then against No. 5 qualifier Pritchett, Crampton took a bigger step. He left first with a .068-second reaction time and sped to his best pass of the weekend, 3.812 seconds at 314.83 mph. That was enough to dispatch Pritchett's 3.838 at 320.13 mph. "Round-wins have been hard to come by this year," Crampton said. "These four races in a row make it even tougher on everybody, so to get a win over someone like Leah in that Schumacher Racing car in the first round here was pretty rewarding, not only for me but especially for the guys. They deserve it." Crampton was on another good run in the second round against Antron Brown before slowing at the top end in a 3.937-second pass at 257.24 mph. Brown sped by with a run of 3.856 seconds at 314.31 mph. Crampton and the MLR team will now take the car to the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals next weekend at Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio. "This car is going to carry us as far as Morgan will let us," Crampton said. "I don't know when he's going to want it back. The car's been a good change."
