SWANSBORO, NC – Late Model newcomer Colin Garrett will be making his first
start at Carteret County Speedway in Sunday’s Interstate Batteries Memorial
Classic.

Garrett, 15, from South Boston, Virginia is a rookie in Late Model racing,
competing predominantly in the Limited Sportsman at South Boston Speedway
for Peyton Sellers. He made the jump to Late Models this year after racing
in Pure Stock last year and now, he’s hoping to be in contention for his
first career win.

“I’m really looking forward to learning the new track,?? Garrett said. “The
no banking thing is new to me. I’ve raced Caraway and South Boston and you
have something to hold you through the corners. Carteret is completely
flat. It’s something different on my part of racing. It’ll be pretty cool
to get better and learn a new track like this.

“We tested some today, it was pretty cool. The track’s really different.
Just trying to get accustomed to the track and fine tune it. I’m looking
forward to seeing what it’s like.??

Along with getting a feel for the track, Garrett is still getting
accustomed to the Late Models.

“This has been my first year in the Limited Sportsman class at South Boston
and we’re running some Late Model races throughout the season including
Carteret,?? Garrett remarked. “Peyton Sellers has taught me a lot about
South Boston and getting around that place. I’m looking forward to a
better season throughout the year and getting some better finishes to see
what we can do.??

Looking ahead to Carteret, Garrett is hopeful he can come away with a
strong run or maybe his first win. He will be guided by crew chief Eric
Winslow, a long-time competitor at South Boston Speedway as well as at
Franklin County Speedway in Callaway, Virginia.

“I think if all the pieces come together, I think we can maybe have a
pretty good shot of getting a victory this weekend,?? Garrett commented.
“Eric Windlow is my crew chief and Sellers, Winslow and the whole team give
me a great car.??

Sellers got his start racing Go-Karts while he was in middle school before
making the jump to Pure Stock.

“I wasn’t very competitive at all in Go-Karts,?? Garrett stated. “I went to
Camp Motorsport at Virginia International Raceway. It’s something I always
wanted to do and last year, I started in the pure stock division at South
Boston.??

Making the transition from Go-Karts to racecars was difficult at first for
Garrett. It took him a while to get the hang of racing with other cars,
but he began to get the hang of it by the end of the season.

“It was kind of a rough beginning to the year,?? Garrett explained. “I had
to learn how torace coming from a non-racing background, learning to race
cars with other people on track. We got two top-five finishes at the end
of the season. Pure Stock wasn’t much to give on so we talked to Peyton
and decided it was a good time to move up to the limited class and here we
are today.??

Garrett will have his work cut out for him on Sunday, racing against
veterans such as Clay Jones and Jeff Oakley. Jones scored the win in the
inaugural race at Carteret County Speedway last September while Oakley
finished second in the very same race.
