My Car Check market guide May 2016 - Fiesta and Vespa

My Car Check market guide: May 2016
SUVs are in demand but UK commuters just don't get Scooters

Used car of the month: Ford Fiesta Zetec

Used bike of the month: Vespa GTS 300

My Car Check's valuation experts reveal significant trends in the UK market and choose a car and bike of the month.

Head of Valuation Services at My Car Check, Gavin Amos, said: "The Ford Fiesta Zetec was the most searched model on My Car Check last year. You get a lot of bang for your buck in terms of in-car technology and they're fun and easy to drive. The average value of Fiesta Zetecs checked with us in 2015 was just £1,545 and you're guaranteed a huge choice when it comes to age, mileage and condition. As always, check to make sure the one you're looking at is what it claims to be, especially when buying privately."

As to market trends, Amos said: "Generally speaking, the used car market is steady with reasonable stock availability. Super minis still dominate the marketplace, the SUV sector continues to go from strength to strength, and top end 4x4s have slightly dipped in value over recent weeks. Winter feels like it has dragged on this year, but thoughts are already turning to the big summer family holiday, which can put a bit of a dent in sales activity."

On the motorbike, scooter and moped sector, My Car Check's Rob Hobson said: "Visit most large European cities and Scooters are everywhere, but UK commuters just don't seem to get the benefits. The weather is often cited as the main reason, but that's not the whole story. Recent analysis of our 2015 data showed Scooters had the highest proportion of write-offs vs searches made for any body style. At 21%, effectively one in five, they were very marginally riskier in this regard than 3-door hatchback cars (20.9%), but significantly riskier than motorbikes (16.8%).

"There's a decent range of Scooters on the market and the Vespa brand has more kudos than most. The iconic GTS 300 stands out in terms of desirability. With low running costs and healthy residual values, this luxury top end model represents an efficient and stylish way of beating the morning rush."

As to market trends, Hobson said: "Overall, the used bike market is still being held back by the changeable weather. Used values are strengthening a little due to the lack of prime condition stock, but we need a period of sustained sunshine to really get the season started."
