Currie warms to Mercedes-Benz Actros

The reigning Mercedes-Benz Truck Dealer of the Year has served up a perfect blend of reliable, fuel-efficient performance, driver appeal and top-quality back-up to leading Scottish haulier Currie European.

The Dumfries-based operator has taken delivery of 10 Actros 2545 tractors with BigSpace cabs. Replacements for vehicles by another manufacturer, they arrived via Mercedes-Benz Commercial Vehicles Aberdeen and are the subject of contract hire agreements with the Dealer's parent company, T.O.M. Vehicle Rental, under which each will cover 220,000 km per year.

The new trucks are already hard at work. Double-shifted, they trunk at night to a distribution centre in the North-West of England, then return in the daytime with loads for delivery to supermarkets across Scotland.

Currie's placed its biggest order yet for trucks bearing the famous three-pointed star following an impressive performance by its first four Actros.

"We took a pair of new Actros two years ago to try them out," recalled Operations Director Allan Jamieson. "We were so pleased with their fuel efficiency and with the feedback from our drivers that we added another couple soon afterwards.

"Those four trucks have each been covering 300,000 km a year, and none of them has ever let us down. On the strength of that experience, we had no hesitation in placing our latest order."

Mr Jamieson continued: "In simple terms, we get a lot more truck for our money when we buy Actros. They're better specified than our previous vehicles, and given their very comfortable cabs it's no surprise that they've gone down so well with our drivers.

"Consumption of both diesel and AdBlue is markedly lower and their reliability is proven, while we also know that the back-up will be there if we need it. When one of our first Actros was involved in an accident and had to be taken off the road, we were provided with a replacement vehicle straight away, with no questions asked.

"That level of support is absolutely priceless. Along with the highly competitive contract rates and excellent service we receive from Mercedes-Benz Commercial Vehicles and T.O.M., it all adds up to an unbeatable package."

Currie European's latest trucks are fitted with Mercedes-Benz Predictive Powertrain Control (PPC) systems, which use GPS mapping to 'read' the road ahead, adjusting cruise control settings and gear ratios, and making full use of the truck's EcoRoll function, to restrict diesel consumption and CO2 emissions.

"We trialled a PPC-equipped demonstrator and it returned significantly better mpg figures than our standard tractors," said Mr Jamieson. "In a high-mileage operation such as ours, any improvement in fuel economy represents a valuable saving - we therefore expect the PPC systems on the new vehicles to pay for themselves quickly."

He added: "We've been impressed with everything we've seen of the Actros and the Mercedes-Benz Commercial Vehicles network in Scotland. This explains why, from a virtual standing start just a couple of years ago, Mercedes-Benz has now claimed a 10% share of our fleet which, as I'm just about to order another two, continues to grow."
