NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Feb. 12, 2012: Cody Coughlin and the JEGS.com Chevrolet team kicked off the 2012 season with a one-day test Friday at New Smyrna Speedway in preparation for the 46th World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing.

Coughlin and new crew chief Butch VanDoorn were able to work together on-track under simulated race conditions for the first time as they fine-tuned their communication and pit stop procedures as well as getting the JEGS.com Late Model tuned for success.

"It was really nice to see everything come together with our program this year," the 16-year-old Coughlin said. "I enjoyed working with the team today, and it was nice to have a successful test. I'm excited to get back down here next week and kick off the 2012 season for real."

Coughlin turned numerous laps around the half-mile track in Central Florida, with a best time of 18.28 seconds. Rain cut the test short, but Coughlin and VanDoorn worked well at making adjustments to make the car better.

"I'm really happy with Cody's progress and the way the team worked," said VanDoorn, who has won the last three championships in the series. "We are excited to get rolling and kick 2012 off at New Smyrna during Speedweeks."

New Smyrna hosts short-track racers from all over the country in a week of racing that coincides with NASCAR's Speedweeks at Daytona International Speedway. Coughlin and the JEGS.com team return for a day of practice next Thursday with a second JEGS.com Chevy, with the first race slated for Feb. 18. Several other races are planned the following week at New Smyrna, too.

"I can't wait to get back down here and see what we've got," Coughlin said. "It's exciting that we're starting our season, and I've got to thank the Lord for all he's blessed us with. My family -- mom, dad and Jelly (sister) will be there, too, and they're a very important part of my life. I'm very blessed."
