DOUG BINSTOCK WORKING HARD TO KEEP ROCKY MOUNTAIN RACEWAY SUCCESSFUL
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
American Speed Association PR
DAYTONA BEACH, FL (Saturday, February 13, 2010) - Doug Binstock is always thinking
and looking for what it takes to keep Rocky Mountain Raceway, an ASA Member Track,
thriving and successful.  When you talk to him, you will find someone who feels
that racing needs to get back to its core audience and keep it affordable for the
competitors.
Since 1998, Binstock has held the position of General Manager where he oversees
all facets of the raceway including racing operations, entertainment, properties
 and sales.
Rocky Mountain Raceway, in West Valley City, UT, a suburb of Salt Lake City, has
 an oval that is sanctioned by the American Speed Association, a drag strip that
 is sanctioned by IHRA and a motocross track.  Binstock sees the value of being
part of a sanctioning body, "The heart of racing is a good foundation with tiers
 of divisions that create a great and entertaining venue and I think that is where
the sanctioning bodies come into play. By helping solidify and build a universal
 programs across the country," he said.  "The reason I promote Dennis (Huth, ASA
 President) so hard to other tracks is because I think we need that national stage
to be on.  We need an organization to keep us all tied together and not little islands
where each of us is doing their own things.  It doesn't make sense."
That national stage includes working with other member tracks to and help in finding
ways to overcome our obstacles, "If we are all islands, eventually our shores are
going to erode is the best way to look at it.  There is a balance that has to be
 met and I think our sport has gotten way out of hand with the expense of our sport
versus the ability for it to generate an income," Binstock said.  "I think every
 promoter out there is fighting that battle.  That is where crate engines and spec
cars have come in to play.  Technology has taken this sport to places that is crazy
and well above the financial capability of the racers; we have to find that balance.
 We have to find it on the national basis so that we are all fairly unified across
the nation and that is where your national sanctioning bodies and workshops come
 into play.  They tie us all together.  They give us integration which allows the
racer to chase the "dream"."
Like other promoters, Binstock is trying to find ways to overcome some obstacles
 that many other promoters find at their tracks, "We are like everyone else, we
fight the same struggles.  We are looking for a car count, we are looking for crowds,
attendance, and sponsors," Binstock explained.  "We try to marry all of that together
into a business model where the racers are happy, the fans are happy and we put
on a good quality and entertaining show."
One thing he is aware of is what it takes to get competitors in this sport, "It's
so expensive for racers to get into this sport.  A lot of them will get into it
just looking for a local hobby and will stay in the lower ranks to race within their
means.  And yet there are a lot of other people that do have the aspirations and
 dreams to become something more than just a local racer and may want to do some
 touring racing.  They may be the one out of a thousand or one out of two thousand
to go up the ladder into the higher national ranks.  It's all got to be there together."
While on the other side of the fence is the grandstands and Binstock thinks it may
be time to get the core audience that he used to have back to the track, "Maybe
I need to re-think my marketing and work harder on getting my core audience back
 and more often rather than looking for that new audience.  This is still entertaining
and very affordable to watch.  That is my biggest goal this year to get my audience
and make my sponsors happy.  We are looking to keep growing and keeping that fan
 count up."  Binstock said.  But he is also aware that these are changing times,
 "Our industry is completely different than 13-14 years ago.  Our audience is different.
Entertainment has changed.  More people are staying home, their entertainment values
have changed. I think it will cycle back around. But we need to work harder at being
more entertaining to draw the fans back out."
This includes making sure that the drivers are accessible to the fans which made
 racing popular not only on the local level but the national level.  The bottom
line that Binstock sees in order for all parts of racing to be successful is that
everyone needs to work together instead of being in competition with each other.
  He cited about the many different rules packages are out there for the same style
of cars and he sees where being part of a major sanctioning body like ASA will help
get those tracks to work together and have everyone benefit from it.
"Doug has been in this business for a long time and is very articulate when he shares
his thoughts about this sport," Dennis Huth, ASA President said.  "Like other promoters
he has seen the highs and lows in this sport.  He is very passionate about what
he feels is needed to be successful.  He delivers a good message for everyone to
 think about."
The ASA Member Track program is comprised of more than 35 short tracks around the
United States, as well as a variety of regional and national touring series. For
