Washington DC July 27, 2009; the AIADA newsletter reported that according to the Wall Street Journal, auto dealers said they saw a surge in showroom traffic and an uptick in sales Friday, the first day of the federal government's "cash for clunkers" program.

To help dealers navigate and speed up the registration process, NHTSA has issued a few pointers.

Dealers should note that each franchise being registered must have a different email address.

Second, when entering your address, use the state abbreviation in capital letters instead of typing the full state name. Third, when resubmitting after receiving a rejection notice, use the originally issued authorization code.

Finally, when entering bank information, use the "Existing Bank" option to search for your bank by the routing number. Do not use the "New Bank" option unless you cannot find your bank in the existing list.

Dealers who encounter problems during the registration process should visit the dealer section of the official CARS website by clicking here or call the CARS Hotline at 1-866-CAR-7891.

Dealers who did not receive authorization letters should contact their respective original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to ensure all dealership information is accurate with the OEM and request that their information be resubmitted to NHTSA.
