Dean of Auto Designers Harley Earl - Historic Pocketwatch at Auction

PHOTO

Publishers Note; Below you can read the letter I've just received from Richard Earl, Harley's Grandson. I thought that the auto enthusiasts in our audience should know about this opportunity to own a piece of automotive industry history.
Many of us agree with this statement "What Frank Lloyd Wright did for architecture, Harley J. Earl did for the 20th twentieth century auto world. An artist and purveyor to millions of people, Earl created works of art that survive as symbols of a vanished age, an age of America's automotive opulence but also of craftsmanship, integrity and beauty."

If any TACH'er buys the watch, please let me know...bgordon@theautochannel.com

CLICK4 Watch Auction Details

Dear Bob,
Since you’ve always appreciated design-in-industry news, I just wanted to let you know about a valuable Patek Philippe watch my grandfather, Harley Earl, owned that's going up for auction on September 27, 2006 at the Downtown Athletic Club, DAC (see web-link directly below). This rare watch has the inscription written on its back how it was a 20th anniversary gift to Designer-Earl from GM Styling, circa 1945.

My father, Jerry Earl(Harley's Son ed.), recently decided to sell it even though I tried convincing him how it should remain in the family since it is a museum piece watch. After all, the history behind Harley Earl creating the American auto industry’s dependency on design is tied to or part of this important watch.

In any event, I thought you might help get the word out quickly so some lucky auto enthusiast/car collector could potentially buy this slice of Americana. My wish is that a museum will end up purchasing it and this way many auto aficionados could enjoy seeing this historic treasure in the future.

With kind regards,
Richard Earl
