SHIELDS, WEAVER OUTPACE QUALIFIERS AT AUTO CLUB FAMOSO RACEWAY

 

            BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Qualifying is complete at the NHRA Lucas
Oil Drag Racing Series event presented by Budweiser at Auto Club Famoso
Raceway.  Top Alcohol Dragster driver Duane Shields set the pace in Top
Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car racer John Weaver took the No. 1
qualifying spot in his class.

Shields, a Boulder City, Nev., resident, ran 5.350 seconds at 264.62 mph to
take the No. 1 spot.  The second place qualifier, Sean O'Bannon of Alta
Loma, Calif., ran 5.467 seconds at 266.66 mph.  In the opening round of
eliminations Sunday, Shields will face Phoenix's Mark Niver, the No. 8
qualifier.

Newport Beach, Calif., resident Weaver jumped from the fifth qualifying
position to the top with a 5.722-second, 251.04 mph pass.  He will square
off against Jeff Carroll, Santa Barbara, Calif., in the first round of
eliminations.  Veteran Top Alcohol Funny Car racer Larry Miner, Lodi,
Calif., was the No. 2 qualifier.

Mapleton, Utah's Alan Ellis is the top qualifier in Comp Eliminator and
Bakersfield resident Tom Mettler is No. 2.  Bryan McClanahan, Alta Loma,
Calif., led the Super Stock field, and Don Wann of Modesto, Calif., was No.
1 in Stock Eliminator.  In Top Comp, Chip Rumis, Romona, Calif., was the
best qualifier and Pete Miclette, Garberville, Calif., set the bar in
Sportsman Motorcycle presented by Harley Davidson.

            Racing continues Saturday at Auto Club Famoso Raceway.  Gates
open at 7 a.m.  Qualifying and time trials are slated from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
and eliminations will start at 2 p.m.  Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol
Funny Car will run first round at 5 p.m.

Tickets are for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series are $20 and children
