Blue Sun Announces Improved Emission Reductions, Entry Into Major Markets

DENVER, Aug. 30, 2005 -- Results from a federal study indicate Blue Sun B20 produced decreased emissions in four major air pollutant categories, compared to typical B20 blends.

Blue Sun is the leading supplier of premium biodiesel in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Idaho. The company's biodiesel fuel is produced from the virgin oil from such crops as canola and mustard grown by Blue Sun Producers, the company's cooperative of regional farmers.

"In a 12-month study using Blue Sun's B20 biodiesel, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) found nitrogen oxide (NOx) was reduced by 4 percent compared to conventional diesel," said Jeff Probst, president of Blue Sun. NOx is a major source of ground-level ozone smog, an irritant often sited as the cause of asthma and other respiratory ailments.

NREL tests indicate Blue Sun B20 reduced carbon monoxide by 32 percent, hydrocarbons by 40 percent, and particulate matter by 24 percent. This compares to other biodiesel studies, showing reductions in the same pollutants by 12.6, 11, and 18 percent, respectively.

Blue Sun will continue to develop cleaner fuels and participate in government studies to ensure Blue Sun B20 outperforms customer expectations and exceeds industry standards.

The study compared Blue Sun B20 emissions with pollutants from low-sulfur diesel. Blue Sun B20 is a blend of 20 percent biodiesel, 80 percent low-sulfur diesel and a proprietary eco-additive that increases cetane, storage life and performance. Blue Sun B20 also works at -30 degrees Fahrenheit and customers report a 5 percent - 10 percent increase in fuel economy. NREL conducted the study by testing Blue Sun B20 in five buses operated by Denver's Regional Transportation District (RTD), compared to four buses running on conventional diesel.

U.S. Sen. Ken Salazar and Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper participated in the announcement with Blue Sun. Hickenlooper, a national leader in sustainable urban development, discussed the results of Denver's biodiesel pilot project. He said, "I am happy to report Blue Sun has delivered on all its [emissions and performance] promises."

Blue Sun also announced the opening of 15 additional retail pumps, bringing the company's total to 25 pumps throughout the Rocky Mountain Region. This is more B20 pumps than any other biodiesel company in North America.
