MIAMI, Fla. (Nov. 11, 2001) – On Veterans Day at Homestead-Miami Speedway, NASCAR Winston Cup veteran Bill Elliott proved he’s still got what it takes. Elliott, driver of the No. 9 Dodge Dealers/UAW Dodge, took the checkered flag after taking the lead from rookie driver and teammate Casey Atwood with less than five laps to go in the Pennzoil 400. Atwood, driver of the No. 19 Dodge Dealers/UAW Dodge finished third.

Elliott, who started from the pole, captured his first win since 1994. His victory marked the fourth win for Dodge this season. Atwood’s third place finish was the best of his rookie Winston Cup season.

Michael Waltrip, driver of the No. 15 NAPA Chevrolet, finished second. Florida has been good to Waltrip, who’s finish today was only his third top ten finish of the season. Waltrip won the Daytona 500 in February and placed second to teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr. in July’s Pepsi 400 at Daytona International Speedway.

Jeff Burton, driver of the No. 99 CITGO Superguard Ford, finished fourth followed by Sterling Marlin, driver of the No. 40 Coors Light Dodge, in fifth.

Jeff Gordon, who finished 28th, did not clinch the Winston Cup championship today. However he simply has to start the last two races to win, despite where his closest challenger Ricky Rudd places in the season ending races.
